Principal Lavender is Now Principal Haynes

Dear Chandler Oaks Families,

After much thought, I have decided to go back to my family name of Haynes. I have wanted to do this for some time, since the name is so very much a part of who I am. Now seems to be the best time, since I am joining a new community and starting fresh.

The process is time consuming and I will need help to change the name in some places, so you will still see the old one pop up here and there for a while. I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause.

Please share this information with students as soon as you can, so they can get used to it and feel more comfortable once school starts.

Thank you so much for your understanding and help with this transition.

New Student Registration Begins and Office Opens August 2

Dear Chandler Oaks Families,

We have had a few delays in getting into our new building, so it will take most of the rest of July to get settled in. Consequently, we will not be ready to register new students or even open the office to the public until Monday, August 2.

GENERAL OFFICE HOURS BEGINNING AUGUST 2ND:

7:30 AM-4:30 PM, Monday-Friday (closed all day August 6, and the mornings of August 12 and 19)

NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION-August 2-11

Note: You do NOT need to re-register with us if the following is true:
  • Your student attended Teravista, Sommer or Cactus Ranch last year, and you indicated to those schools you would be attending Chandler Oaks this year,
  • OR you registered your new student or kindergartener at one of those campuses during Kindergarten Round Up or some other time this spring or summer.

If you have a new student who has NOT been registered, please come to the school during office hours August 2-11. (We will be creating class lists on August 12, so we really need you to register before then.) If you will be out of town during that timeframe, please call our registrar, Frankie Hamilton, at 512-704-0400 (AFTER July 19) to set up an appointment to register prior to or after the registration period.

You can find the list of paperwork necessary to register on the district's webpage.

Remember that the office will be closed all day August 6 and the mornings of August 12 and 19.

And don't forget our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and School Tour the evening of August 3rd!

IB Update: School Board Passes Budget with Special Funding For COE Program

Dear Chandler Oaks Families,
Last Thursday, the Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees passed a budget that included some special funding for Chandler Oaks and Caldwell Heights Elementary Schools.
The funds will cover the cost for both schools to continue moving towards becoming authorized International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme schools. That funding covers fees, half-time IB Coordinators, and training costs for this upcoming school year.

Consideration PhaseThis period started this summer and lasts until March of this school year. During this time we will continue to hold parent information sessions and get feedback from the community. We will also send 30 staff members to training during the summer. Even though we are still in this phase, we will begin implementing many aspects of the program starting the first day of school. Meanwhile, we are asking families to please continue sharing their views and asking questions about the program.
Candidacy Phase
If all continues to go fairly smoothly, we plan to submit our "Application Part A" to IB in March. From that point forward, we are considered a "candidate school" and have access to IB resources. This period usually lasts 2-3 years. During this time we will get fully up to speed in terms of implementation (including teaching a second language). We expect to submit our application for authorization at the beginning of the school year 2012-13.

I hope you all are as excited as we are about this news. Please stay tuned for more information about future IB Parent Information Sessions and please continue to share with us your ideas and concerns.

IB-PYP Parent Information Sessions

Dear Chandler Oaks ES Parents,
CORRECTION TO LAST E-NEWS: Our PTA website is www.chandleroakspta.org

                                            IB-PYP INFORMATION SESSIONS
The district is giving close consideration to the possibility of Chandler Oaks beginning the process of seeking authorization as an International Primary Years Programme. (Like Anderson Mill and Spicewood Elementaries did several years back.) This is a campus-based decision, however, so we are seeking input from our families, first. (The journey generally takes about 3 years, starting with the "Consideration Phase".)

Some of you are familiar with the IB diploma program that is being newly implemented at Stony Point High School and has been at Westwood for many years. For some of you this may be completely new. Also, the PYP is very different from the diploma program since it involves every student in the school. With that in mind, I would like to hold some information sessions to give you a glimpse of this complex program, answer any questions you might have, and get your feedback.

Below are listed 3 information sessions. You only need to attend one, as they are all the same. I tried to pick different times and venues to meet a variety of parents' schedules. Don't worry if you can not make any of these, though. There will be other opportunities!

If you are completely new to IB programming, may I suggest that you visit the Anderson Mill and Spicewood Elementary websites and browse around. You can also go to ibo.org and click on the Primary Years Programme to get the bigger picture. Please come ready to ask questions and discuss.

SESSIONS:
May 25th, 8:00 AM, RRISD Athletic Complex Meeting Room (Coffee and pastries will be served.)

May 27th, 6:30 PM, Walsh Lecture Hall

May 28th, 11:00 AM, RRISD Athletic Complex Meeting Room (Please feel free to "brown bag" it and bring your lunch to enjoy while listening and discussing).

See you there!

Dear Chandler Oaks ES Families,

Well over 100 kindergarteners registered for school in March. We are very excited about them coming. They will be the first class who will have the chance to attend Chandler Oaks for all 6 years of their elementary school experience. Welcome, welcome to our youngest students and their very enthusiastic (though occasionally tearful) parents!!!

We have new staff as well:
Rosie Alier, Administrative Associate (campus secretary)
Dayna Dees, Librarian
Laurie Mutscher, Counselor
and 17 teachers coming from Teravista, Sommer, Forest North, Voigt, Anderson Mill, Jollyville, and Gattis elementary schools. (We still have many left to hire, though)

And, finally, we have a new office. The principal, secretary and librarian are now housed in a portable classroom at Sommer Elementary. You can reach us at 704-0410.

The dream is becoming reality....slowly but surely.

Choosing a Mascot and Colors

April 1, 2010

Dear Chandler Oaks Families,

The time has come! We are ready to start taking suggestions for Chandler Oaks colors and mascot! We will ask you to submit suggestions on paper to a box in your current library. Most frequently submitted suggestions and other suggestions of merit will be placed on an electronic ballot for a final vote.

Families without home computers can access the ballot on a computer in the library at their current school. Please just vote once. When the window for voting has closed, school officials will work with the PTA president or designee to determine the winner and make the exciting announcement.

It is preferred that we not choose the same mascot as another Round Rock elementary school but we can duplicate a middle or high school mascot. Here are the current RRISD elementary school mascots: armadillo, bee, blue jay, bobcat, bulldog, comet, cougar, dinosaur, eagle (2), gator, gex the gecko, Indian, Indian brave, jaguar, lion, longhorn, owl, panther, pioneer, rider, roadrunner, stallion, Texan, tiger, Viking, wolf, and wildcat. The mascots at the middle and high school we feed into are the Walsh Wildcats and the Stonypoint Tigers.

FYI: The color scheme within our building is one of natural earthy shades of color that will accent the stone motif that is carried through the main part of the building. Tile/paint/accents will include: RED (an earthy, almost brick-like red), PURPLE (dark, almost eggplant), and TAN (also dark, warm). We can choose two or three colors as our official colors.

¬TIMELINES

APRIL 16 is the deadline for submitting suggestions.

APRIL 21-27 is the window for voting on line. Students can vote by going here (starting April 21st): http://schools.roundrockisd.org/chandleroaks/vote.asp

The FIRST WEEK IN MAY the mascot and colors will be announced via eNews, principal’s blog and at the Teravista and Sommer campuses.

Thanks everyone!

Rebecca Lavender and the Chandler Oaks Staff

Rebecca Lavender named Chandler Oaks Elementary School Principal

Rebecca Lavender, current principal at Anderson Mill Elementary School, has been selected to lead the district’s newest elementary school. Chandler Oaks Elementary School is currently under construction in the Stone Oak subdivision and will welcome students August 2010.

Lavender has a global view of education and values partnerships with students, parents and community members. Under her leadership, Anderson Mill has become an International Baccalaureate World school and is TEA Recognized. “Rebecca is passionate about education and building relationships within her community,” said Superintendent Dr. Jesús Chávez. “I know she will be committed to providing exemplary education at Chandler Oaks.”

For the past 9 years Lavender has served as the principal of Anderson Mill and has 5 years of elementary assistant principal experience in RRISD. Prior to her administrative assignments she was a teacher in both Round Rock and Ysleta ISD for 12 years. Lavender received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a Masters in Education Administration from the University of Texas at El Paso.

FAQs

When will we be able to vote on our colors and mascot?
Probably in April. Stay tuned!

Will any students ride the bus to school?
No, all homes are within the "walk zone", so no buses will be necessary.

Can students from other schools request a transfer to COE?
The district has named our school a "closed" campus, so transfer requests can not be accepted.

How many students are we expecting?
Close to 600.

Will we have a pre-kindergarten or any other special programs?
At this time, no special programs are expected.

Will our school be ready for us in August?
The construction department tells me that they are on schedule to open on time. Be watching for pictures of the progress to be posted as we move along. Also, be watching for the opportunity to tour the new building.

When can we meet you?
I will be present for some portion of Kindergarten Round-Up at both schools. I will be at both PTA Formation Meetings, as well. And, I will be attending some PTA meetings and other evening events at Sommer and Teravista starting in March or April.
